Every so often – not regularly, but once every few months – I’ll catch a few minutes of a movie (or watch the trailer) and fall in love with it simply due to the costumes).  When I was a teen, Reservoir Dogs was my first love – cool black suits and skinny ties did it for me back then.  

More recently, I caught the second half of Crazy Stupid Love, a Steve Carell and and Ryan Gosling flick about a middle aged romantic no hoper and his young, cool and romantically successful friend. 

As soon as the credits rolled I jumped on the Internet to find out more about the outfits. Dayna Pink, the costume designer on Crazy Stupid Love, picked out some outfits and accessories for Gosling that made me want to reach for the credit card.  Everything about what the guy was wearing worked for me, and I wanted nothing more than to sneak on set and steal the wardrobe.

Two things in the movie popped out at me,  The first were the sunglasses worn by Ryan Gosling, some sort of Ray Ban Wayfarer-esque shades in a tortoiseshell frame.  I’ve been wearing tortoiseshell wayfarers for years, so that one was a no brainer.

The second, and more unusual, was Gosling’s necklace.  He wears a long chain with a silver Roman coin pendant throughout the movie.  It was unusual for me to be drawn to a necklace as I’m not really a jewelry guy, but there was just something about this pendant that jumped out at me. 

Anyway, I ordered a close-enough replica (the original was a one of a kind), and it arrived this morning.  Over the Christmas season I’ll be rocking a Roman coin pendant ala Crazy Stupid Love.  Look out world.  I now come with accessories!

Of course, if you cannot try on the dress before you buy it, it is crucial to measure yourself before ordering. But imagine the selection! No mall has so many choices as the selections you find from the comfort of your own home.

At first you can get overwhelmed. You are probably even a little weary of who to shop with. Being careful is a good quality to have. But take the chance and browse your options. You will undoubtedly use the same online stores again and again because you will come to know where to find the good deals. Cheap party dresses can be elegant and unique, and a different one at every party will get you noticed.

Guys look great with pierced ears, but why is that the only kind of facial piercing most guys like. There are other facial piercings for guys that look just as good. The one I like most is nose piercings; studs or rings.

I used to like eyebrow piercings, and anything on the lips is good, but there’s something about a nose piercing on a man that makes him look very masculine.

And a nose piercing seems to be all a man needs to look hip. You get the impression that Lenny Kravitz is full of facial piercings, but he’s only got the ears and the nose done. He’s got both nostrils, a ring one side, a stud the other. Cool!

What I don’t like is when a man has one ear pierced. Guys with one ear pierced are always square, anyway. If he’s going to do it, then he’s got to get both done. I love those baby-face guys when they wear hoops, especially in gold. And small studs look good on all men.

I saw this guy the other day with studs and the tiniest nose stud and he was wearing a business suit. Now, that looked cool! Young, good looking, business suit and that gorgeous jewelry. I think most guys could pull it off.

I hear a lot of flack about guys and facial piercings, but I’m all for it. Wish more would do it.

Don’t underestimate the power of jewelry to complete or to provide a new look to your outfit.  You don’t need expensive jewelry like chocolate diamonds, although if you have them take full advantage of them and accent any of your natural, earthy toned clothing with them.

When used properly jewelry can add spice and personality to your outfits.  It can complete the look or it can give a new look to your older clothes.  While you want to choose jewelry that is in style you also need to choose items that fit your personality and your style.  Your jewelry should fit your style as much as your clothing does.

 This season chunky jewelry is in style.  Larger bib style necklaces, dangling chandelier earrings, bangles and large cocktail rings.  The use of varied materials, colors, shapes and metals is popular. 

This means in necklaces you may see larger stones mixed with colored glass or large beads and even different shapes of metals.  Earrings are featuring long strings of beads, metal designs or even feathers.  Bangles and cuffs are seen in bold colors and in varied shapes.  Cocktail rings often feature a specific motif, stone or metal design.

Look for jewelry that will bring out or enhance the current colors in your wardrobe.  Because larger jewelry is in style it is best to choose a couple of pieces.  Don’t wear too many large pieces at one time.

Making your own dresses can be a great way to save money on your wardrobe as well as make sure you get the right kind of dress that fits your body perfectly. If you are interested in making your own dresses, here are some must-have items that you should really consider buying if you don’t already have them.

You should have a high quality sewing machine that has several different stitches and is easy to work with. I recommend the Brother CS6000i sewing machine as it is not that expensive and it has 60 different stitches to work with. It also has 7 one-step buttonhole designs as well as you can download different patterns from the Internet since it is a computerized sewing machine. If you decide to go with a different sewing machine just make sure it is a good quality machine that offers you enough variety to make different kinds of dresses.

You will definitely need a good cloth measuring tape so you can take proper measurements of your body as well as measure out your dress pattern as well. Don’t just use any old plastic measuring tape as they tend to fall apart easily. Instead spend a few more dollars and get a nice clothe one.

You will also need a variety of colors of thread to sew your dresses. You can buy some basic neutral colors like white, tan, black, and navy blue and then pick up any other colors you may need when you pick out the fabric for your dress. It is not a bad idea to have these neutral colored thread spools on hand in case you need them.

There are other supplies that you will need depending on the style of dresses you can plan on making but the above items are must haves for dress making.
